Verse-like prose follows a young runaway slave as she escapes her harsh master to Canada along the Underground Railroad. The journey is difficult and hazardous. Her family must run for their lives by the light of the full moon, some shoeless. Snarling dogs and overseers are in hot pursuit. At the climax of the story they're almost discovered in the back of a wagon. The narrative conveys the emotional and physical hardships of the trip ("Fear is so real, it lies here beside me"). This suspenseful story successfully introduces an important chapter in America's history for youngest readers. It is beautifully illustrated with dramatic oil paintings. Paperback. 40 pages. Approximately 10½"x8". Age 5-12
